Reading another fellow bloggers blog, I thought I would put my 2 cents in.
Depending if we are staying home, going to my parents house or going to my in-laws house is how we celebrate.
To start with my family, to start we are white and practiced basically how my father was brought up. Our traditions always had my friends in awe. My parents were not holiday decorators other than stockings on the mantle, if we had one, and a tree. We didn’t get and put up the tree until Christmas eve and didn’t decorate it until after dinner, and lastly the child (I was an only child) got to open 1 present picked by an adult. We then would get up on Christmas day, only at a decent hour, had to atleast get dressed, brushed teeth and hair. Then we had one person passing each person a present to open one at a time. It took some time on some Christmas’. Then we would have a light breakfast and turkey and all the trimmings around 1-2pm.
My husbands family, being Mexican have more very different traditions. His mother cooks all day Christmas eve, even preparing the day before. Later in the day we get dressed up, around 2pm or so, and all family that can comes over. We have lunch, talk, play games and at dinner we have the meal she has been slaving over all day. We continue talking and such until midnight, at that time we wish everyone well and merry Christmas with hugs all around. We then open presents, differently every time, this year I was picked to go first and open all my presents from everyone and so on. We then talk for alittle more and then say our goodbyes and go to bed. On Christmas day lately my brother in-law, who is younger than my husband, takes the family out for a movie, this year it was Spiderverse. A few years ago it was the last Star Wars movie.
When my hubby and I are home, with/without my kids, they do every other year with their father, we decorate our house the first weekend in December, in and out but no tree due to fuzz butts. On Yule, the 21st, we give a gift to enjoy. On Christmas day we wake up to enjoy gifts after I get the turkey in the oven. Around 2pm we eat and then I deal with clean up with hubbys help. The next few days we enjoy turkey sandwiches, turkey tacos, turkey tamales, etc.
Granted we have not had many Christmas’ together since my husband serves in the military and has been out of country many times, but this is our family and our traditions.
